Immigration issues in France are unique, given its Enlightenment traditions and colonial past. France has historically had a largely open border policy, but has had to grapple with the human consequences of its colonial past with its large Middle Eastern, African and Asian populations. The response of the former Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy, whose enter come to power in a shift to the right, now as President, has been to state openly that certain immigration is simply not desirable. The new French immigration regime has been criticized by a number of French associations as merely contributing to the precarious situation of illegal aliens and establishing unnecessary burdens to family immigration, and introducing a lack of transparency into administrative review.
